Putting an End to Wasteful Gas Flaring

Some 150 billion cubic meters of natural gas are flared over oil-fields around the world every year. That is equivalent to the annual combined consumption of Germany and France. Until now, the technical obstacles to utilizing this associated gas have been too big – especially in offshore oil production. The British company CompactGTL wants to change this with the help of a technology they developed to turn this gas into an asset. It is converted into a liquid that can be easily mixed with the extracted oil. The first commercial demonstration plant went on stream in Brazil at the end of 2010. Bayer Technology Services has been an important partner in this development.
